Brick has been used as a building material for several thousand years. They are one of the oldest known building materials, with the earliest discovery dating back to 7000 BC in Turkey. Back then, the bricks were made of mud and dried naturally by the sun. Ancient Egyptians were known to make sun dried bricks out of clay and straw, with the greatest breakthrough being the invention of fired brick around 3,500 BC. From this moment on, bricks could be made without the heat of the sun and soon became popular in cooler climates. The Romans prefered to make their bricks in spring, then they stored them for two years before selling or using them.
Brick-making has been an intrinsic element of construction in Ireland for almost 500 years. Brickmaking skills were developed in Ireland during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Bricks were made generally from local clays in all areas of Ireland until well into the twentieth century, and are still manufactured in some places today. Therefore it was common that most brick in historic Irish buildings was of local origin, thus creating an important part of the urban landscape, competing then with stone and in more modern times against concrete. Whilst the vast number of brickworks has shrunk drastically around the country, bricks still form an integral part of urban settings and old bricks remain an important Irish legacy.
